Is your hydrangea getting too much sun or shade? Maybe it has filled in and gotten a little too big for its neighbors. No matter your reason, you can easily transplant your hydrangeas!
The best time to transplant your hydrangeas is when they’re dormant, specifically in early spring. During dormancy, plants don’t need the growth energy and won’t experience much transplant shock if a part of their root system is cut.
As the temperatures warm up and the roots re-establish in their new home, the hydrangeas will start pulling energy from the nutrients in the ground. Because of the re-establishment period, there might be less growth or flower development in the first year, but that’s just because it’s getting settled in.
Let’s go step by step through the transplanting process!
Step 1: Assess
Depending on how long your hydrangea has been in the ground, it may need a trim before the transplanting process. This might mean sacrificing some blooms for the year, but the long-term health and performance of your hydrangea in its new home is priority.
Step 2: Dig
The most important part of transplanting is making sure that you preserve as much of the root ball as possible. Be very careful during the digging process and take it slowly.
Step 3: Move
Once your hydrangea has been dug up, it’s time to move it to its new home! If it’s been in the ground for a while, it might be heavy. Make sure to have all the help you need to complete the process.
Step 4: Plant
It’s very important to plant your hydrangea in its new home before it dries out. Follow the instructions on our planting video for where and how to plant and then give it a good soak.
Once you complete all those steps, your hydrangea will have a new home! Just remember that transplanting is best done when your hydrangea is dormant. Keep that in mind and you’ll be a transplanting pro.
